6 DENIM TRENDS TO KNOW RIGHT NOW

Finding the perfect pair is easy, thanks to our seasonal jean report.
By Natasha Marsh

With a slim fit in the hip and a slightly tapered leg, straight-leg jeans (think of them as the cool cousin to your skinny jeans) have been a classic for years—for good reason. Associate Fashion Director Kate Johanson says the latest pairs are modern yet timelessly cool, and go with practically every shoe in your closet. “This season we’re loving high rises, darker rinses, and a little crop that we can pair back to the variety of boots this season,” Johanson continues, citing AGOLDE and Citizens of Humanity as go-to brands.

For those looking for extra leg room in their denim, wide-leg jeans are the way to go. The options are endless: cropped, high waist, trouser-style… the versatility and comfort of this cut knows no bounds. As for how to wear them? Johanson recommends going for a streamlined top to keep the proportions balanced. Check out FRAME and Pistola Denim for pairs that are equal parts relaxed and tailored.

A great pair of black jeans is a perennial wardrobe staple. "From jet black & slick coating to faded & acid wash, black denim was all over the FW23 runways—R13 and Isabel Marant to name a few," Fashion Director Caroline Maguire says. Chic, comfortable, and flattering, black jeans are an evening triple threat. Just add a going-out top and a pair of fun shoes, and your black jeans are ready for a night on the town.

Yes, skinny jeans are making a comeback in the denim trend cycle. “Skinny jeans are having a true fashion-forward moment and can be quite versatile,” says Maguire. Tuck them into a pair of chunky boots for a chic, fresh take, and add a high-volume top to balance out your proportions. Our fashion director’s favorite brand for stretchy-sleek denim? MOUSSY VINTAGE.

From carpenter to cargo jeans, utilitarian styles are having a major moment. This season, keep an eye out for “unexpected pocket placements and oversized silhouettes” for updated takes on the trend, according to Maguire. When it comes to styling, try pairing these casual-cool styles with more polished pieces like ballet flats and crisp button-down shirts for an unexpected twist that feels very right now. Maguire names EB Denim and Good American as brands to watch for great utilitarian jeans.

Bolstered by Y2K nostalgia, baggy jeans are the loungewear of the denim world. “Baggy denim feels relaxed and casual while still on trend and dressed-up,” says Johanson. Loose through the hip and leg, you might also find them under the moniker “boyfriend jeans”. Look for fun details like low rises, cargo pockets, puddle hems, contrast top-stitching, and paneling. Johanson seeks out Closed for some of her favorite slouchy pairs of jeans.
